Montague Reporter: A ‘Yes’ on Question 6

Over the past couple of weeks, I have spoken with more than 200 neighbors about Question 6, the Protect Water & Nature ballot initiative. I have heard overwhelming support for the measure, especially as people learn more about it.

My message to them has been simple: Question 6 protects local forests, farms, streams, rivers, and wildlife, while creating and improving parks, trails, and green spaces for public use – all without raising taxes.

Under this initiative, the existing sales tax on sporting goods and recreational equipment will be redirected into a dedicated account, generating up to $100 million annually to protect, restore, and create these outdoor spaces.

As of 2021, Massachusetts ranked last in the country in state park funding, despite having the nation’s fastest-growing outdoorrecreation economy. Additionally, the state ranks 42nd in nature access for communities of color, with 79% of low-income residents living in nature-deprived areas.

Let’s move Massachusetts to the forefront of conservation by voting “Yes” on Question 6.
