The Concord Bridge: Approval of Question 6 will help preserve our natural resources

As Concordians our connection to the local landscape is part of our essence. Whether walking the trails of Punkatasset; placidly paddling the Assabet, Sudbury, and Concord Rivers; or seeking family recreation at Walden Pond, these natural spaces are the true heartbeat of our town. Protecting them means preserving everything that makes Concord special to us.

This November, Massachusetts voters will consider Question 6, the Protect Water and Nature initiative. Voting yes on Question 6 is a straightforward way to secure reliable state funding to protect Massachusetts’ natural treasures without creating any new taxes.

By directing existing tax revenues from sporting goods, recreational vehicles, and golf courses into the Nature for All Fund, the initiative provides essential financial backing to help maintain our state’s and town’s natural resources. Beginning in 2028, the proposed law would direct 50% of those revenues to the fund.

As Henry David Thoreau so aptly wrote, “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” Concord’s commitment to conservation is deeply woven into the town’s identity. Our Natural Resources Division manages more than 1,500 acres of conservation land. We are fortunate to be bordered by Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and Minute Man National Historical Park. And organizations such as Concord Land Conservation Trust, The Trustees, The Walden Woods Project, and Mass Audubon are stewards of other protected lands in our town.

Question 6 provides a practical, lasting mechanism to secure state funding for these shared wild spaces. We at Save Concord Wildlife encourage Concord residents to learn more, discuss the proposal with neighbors, and vote yes on Question 6 on November 3.
