Quincy Sun: Quincy Climate Action Network Urges Voters to Vote YES on Ballot Question 6

Quincy Climate Action Network (QCAN) fully endorses a YES vote on Massachusetts Ballot Question 6: Protect Water & Nature. And we hope you will join us in voting YES on 6 on election day, as this ballot question would dedicate funds from existing state sales tax on sporting goods to protect and conserve water and nature—without raising taxes.

Quincy is blessed with beautiful green spaces, including 27 miles of coastline, hundreds of acres of public parks and forests, and ecologically crucial wetlands. A YES on 6 would allocate as much as $100 million each year into a dedicated statewide Nature for All Fund, some of which could be used to preserve Quincy’s green spaces, beaches, and wetlands to protect habitat, reduce pollution in our waterways, and mitigate flooding.

Question 6 doesn’t raise taxes or create a new tax. It simply dedicates the portion of the standard sales tax we already pay on sporting goods like camping gear, golf clubs, and fishing equipment toward water and land conservation. That’s just 0.16% of the state’s $63.4 billion annual budget, but it would make a big difference for land and water.

And Question 6 requiresd strict oversight and annual reporting so we can see exactly how every dollar is spent. QCAN feels strongly that YES on 6 is a win-win for everyone: you don’t pay any extra taxes AND the state will have the future of Massachusetts’ green spaces.
